TILLAMOOK, Ore. -- Two people were killed Friday and another injured in a two-vehicle
collision on Highway 101 near Cloverdale, shutting down the highway for five hours,
police said.
Debris from a two-vehicle collision litters Highway 101 five miles south of Cloverdale.
The names of the victim have not been released.
Police investigators said Daniel Stone, 65, the driver of a 2005 Buick Rendezvous sport utility vehicle
with two occupants, was traveling southbound on Highway 101 near milepost 92.5 when he attempted to pass
another vehicle, said Lt. Gregg Hastings, a spokesman for Oregon State Police.
Stone, of Sun City, Ariz., apparently saw an approaching northbound dump truck and tried to move
back into the southbound lane, he said. He lost control of the SUV, sliding sideways in the
northbound lane where it was struck in the passenger side by the dump truck.
Both occupants of the Buick, Stone and his wife Jean Kay Stone, 66, were pronounced dead at the
scene, he said. They were extricated from the vehicle by local paramedics, Hastings said.
The driver of the 1975 International dump truck, Daniel P. Harvey, 53, of Tillamook, suffered minor
injuries and was transported by ambulance to Tillamook Hospital, he said. The dump truck was empty.
The unknown vehicle being passed at the time of the crash failed to stop at the scene. Authorities
are urging the driver to contact state police at (800) 452-7888.
Highway 101 was reopened about 4:30 p.m.
